Fr. C. Gregory Jones, CSV, died Nov. 22 at TMC Hospice Peppi’s House in Tucson, AZ. He was 73. Fr. Jones was born Nov. 28, 1950, in Detroit, MI, the son of Dan and Winifred BeGole Jones. He is preceded in death by his parents, his stepmother Sharon Jones, brothers Dan and Christopher, and is survived by his brothers George, Michael, Dan and sister Sara Mitchell. Fr. Greg pronounced his first vows as a Viatorian Aug. 6, 1990, and was ordained April 13, 1996 by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin at St. Viator Parish in Chicago.
Fr. Greg graduated from Seoul American High School in Seoul, South Korea. He held a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, and both a Master of Theological Studies and Master of Divinity from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. From 1990 to 1995 he taught at Saint Viator High School in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He then served as Parochial Vicar at St. Viator Parish in Chicago (1995-1998), as chaplain at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale (1998-2001) and as Parochial Vicar at Guardian Angel Cathedral in Las Vegas (2001-2002). From 2002 to 2005, Fr. Greg was Director of Campus Ministry at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus before becoming a mission preacher for the Food for the Poor mission relief organization, based in Coconut Creek, Florida from 2005 to 2014. In 2014, he returned to Arlington Heights to serve as Mission Appeals Director for the Clerics of St. Viator. He retired to the Viatorian Province Center in 2017 but moved to Tucson in 2019 where he served part time as chaplain for the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul and assisted at several parishes including Saint Joseph, St. Rita, St. Pius X, Corpus Christi and St. Cyril.
Visitation for Fr. Greg Jones took place Nov. 30 at St. Pius X Catholic Community, 1800 N. Camino Pio Decimo in Tucson, followed by Mass of Christian Burial. Fr. Jones was interred in the clergy section of Holy Hope Cemetery in Tucson.
