Rev. Edward Cardinal, CSV, died at the age of 84 on Dec. 20, 1981 in the 65th year of his religious life and the 57th year of his priesthood. Fr. Cardinal served as pastor and associate at St. Viator Church.
Fr. Cardinal, also, was a noted historian and former college president at St. Viator College in Bourbonnais, IL. After receiving his doctorate in history from the University of Illinois, Fr. Cardinal served as research assistant in the Vatican Archives.
Fr. Cardinal contributed articles to the New Catholic Encyclopedia and through the National Conference of Christians and Jews, he spoke to more than 500,000 servicemen in the United States and Europe during World War II.
A wake was held on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1981, at St. Viator Recreation Center located at 3650 North Kedvale Avenue in Chicago, from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with a wake service at 8:00 p.m.
A Mass of resurrection was held at St. Viator Church in Chicago on Wed., Dec. 23, 1981 at 12:30 p.m. at which Father Kenneth Morris was principal celebrant. Monsignor John Tracy Ellis preached the homily. Burial was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, IL.
