Rev. Joseph Canella, CSV, former pastor of St. Patrick Parish, died suddenly on Tuesday morning, August 10, 1982, at his residence at Bishop Griffin High School, Springfield, Illinois at the age of 67.
Father Canella was born October 31, 1914, in Burlington, Iowa. He entered the order of the Clerics of St. Viator on Sept. 8, 1937. After completing his seminary studies at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., he was ordained a priest on April 10, 1943.
Father Canella was pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish, Kankakee, Illinois, from 1965 to 1971; during that same time, he also taught at Bishop McNamara High School.
He was pastor of St. Patrick Parish from 1971 to 1974, after which time he took up his teaching duties in Springfield, Illinois.
A wake was held on Thursday, August 12, 1982, at Saint Joseph Church, Springfield, Illinois, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a wake service at 8:00 p.m.
A Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at noon on Friday, August 13, 1982, at Saint Joseph Church, Springfield, Illinois. A burial service was held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 1982 at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois.
