It happens only once every six years.
That’s when Viatorian delegates from around the world gather for the congregation’s General Chapter meeting. In the past, it has taken place in Rome but this year its 30th edition takes place in Mundelein, IL, site of the major seminary of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
Viatorians were elected last fall to represent the Chicago Province. They include Fr. Thomas von Behren, Br. Michael Gosch, Fr. Patrick Render and Fr. Daniel Lydon, as well as Fr. Mick Egan and Fr. Mark Francis who attend as the provincial and most recent superior general.
They took their seats with Viatorians elected from around the world, including Canada, France, Spain, Chile, the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Haiti and Colombia. Among their agenda items over the course of the next three weeks will be electing the next Superior General of the worldwide community and two of his councilors.
Fr. Alain Ambeault, Superior General, runs the meetings and welcomes input from the various delegates and the provinces they represent.
Ultimately, delegates will be making sure the Viatorian Community conforms with the vision of its founder, Fr. Louis Querbes, and the constitution. Issues on the table include looking at religious life, governing structures, mission, finances and international solidarity.
