Administrators at Cristo Rey St. Viator in North Las Vegas began a new tradition last year, by holding a ring ceremony for members of the senior class. This year, the school continued the tradition, weaving the blessing of the rings into a Mass that celebrated the school’s patron, St. Viator.

Fr. Thomas von Behren blesses the rings.

Fr. Thomas von Behren, CSV, celebrated the liturgy and blessed the rings, while Br. Carlos Florez, CSV, Director of Catholic & Viatorian Identity at the school, coordinated all aspects of the Mass, especially involving students in different roles.

“A tradition has begun that will continue in the future,” Fr. von Behren said. “The seniors have their ring facing inward for now, and on the day of the graduation we will have them turn their ring facing outwards — as they go forth into the world of college and universities and work.”

Fr. von Behren was the founding president of Cristo Rey St. Viator. Formerly he served as president of both Bishop Gorman and Saint Viator high schools, where at both institutions the ring ceremony was a valued tradition.

But the Mass and ring ceremony had some lighter moments.. At the end, Fr. von Behren led students in singing, “Oh, When the Saints Go Marching In.” The traditional spiritual underscored students at this Viatorian school emulating their patron saint, St. Viator.

The Mass drew parents and even Associate Connie Gerber to attend.

“It was great fun,” Fr. von Behren added.

As for the seniors, they were thrilled to receive their rings and could be seen showing them to the underclassmen, and faculty and staff.

Their pride, Fr. von Behren said, was tangible, adding: “For me, I share that pride and joy in their accomplishments and I look forward to what the future will hold for them.”
