In 2015, Associate Karen Cutler took over as director of the Viatorian
Youth Congress, one of the most vibrant ways Viatorians minister to and with young people. But it brought her ministry full circle with the Viatorians.
Karen has a bachelor’s degree in communications and a master’s degree in pastoral studies and youth ministry. Her career in the field includes working as a youth minister in parishes and as a campus minister at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas — with Viatorians — and at Trinity High School in River Forest, IL.
In, 2003, Karen made her first commitment as a Viatorian associate and 10 years later she made her commitment definitive, thus formalizing a partnership she has shared with the Viatorians while working side by side with them for more than 30 years.
Currently, Karen serves on staff for the Viatorian Community, as coordinator of programs and special events. Her role varies, from planning retreats and special liturgies to hosting the monthly Taizé prayer services for the community.
Yet, the youth congress energizes her.
“These young people come from Viatorian-sponsored institutions, so they have a sense of the Viatorians,” Karen says. “But through the week, they come to better understand that they are part of a shared vision and mission, and that they are not alone in this mission.”
