Rev. Joseph Paul Gallagher, CSV, died at St. Joseph Parish Rectory, Springfield, Illinois on October 28, 1980. Father Gallagher was born in Chicago, Illinois May 7, 1920. He graduated from De La Salle High School in 1938 and entered the novitiate of the Clerics of St. Viator in 1939. He graduated from St. Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa in 1943 and earned his Master’s Degree in History from DePaul University in 1948. He was ordained to the Priesthood from St. Thomas Seminary, Denver, Colorado on May 16, 1948.
A good part of his life was devoted to teaching at various high schools: Cathedral Boys High School and St. James Trade School in Springfield, Illinois; St. Philip High School, Chicago, Illinois; St. Viator High School, Arlington Heights, Illinois; Mother of Sorrows High School in Blue Island, Illinois; and St. Patrick/Bishop McNamara High School in Kankakee, Illinois and Bishop Manogue High School, Reno, Nevada. He also served on the Viatorian Mission Band from 1952-56. He was associate pastor at St. Rose of Lima Parish, Kankakee, Illinois for seven years and also at St. Joseph Parish, Springfield, Illinois at the time of his death.
A wake service was held on Thursday, October 30, 1982 at St. Joseph Church, Springfield, Illinois at 7:30 p.m. and the Mass of the Resurrection was held at St. Joseph Church on Friday, October 31, 1982 at 11:30 a.m.
Burial was at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside, Illinois.
