Once a year, professed members of the Viatorians break away from their daily roles and set aside time for a retreat, to renew themselves both spiritually and emotionally.
Sr. Dianne Bergant, CSA, leads the reflection.
This week, they began their weeklong retreat at the Province Center in Arlington Heights. Each day begins with Mass before a morning and afternoon sessions, and ending with an informal dinner reception.
“It’s good to come together as a community,” said Fr. Daniel Belanger, CSV, pastor of St. George Parish in Bourbonnais. “This gives us a chance to gather and share good stories, especially about ministries.”
Viatorians on hand include retired members, those actively serving in schools and parishes, as well as those involved in social justice and immigrant accompaniment.
This year’s retreat centers around the theme of “Synodality and Religious Community.” They are led by Sr. Dianne Bergant, CSA, who taught Biblical Studies at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago for 45 years.

“By introducing us to the ancient theme of synodality, Pope Francis is calling the church to recapture its identity as a group of sisters and brothers who ‘walk the path together,’ ” Sr. Dianne said. “This retreat will invite the participants to reflect on various biblical themes and theological concepts that are part of our religious history as well as the religious reality of our lives today.”
