Somewhere, Fr. John Milton, CSV, is smiling. A scholarship created in his name last year by the Viatorian Community is going to another high achieving student, who has developed a love of science while attending Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep.
Angelina Porcayo-Alejo
Angelina Porcayo-Alejo is only the second recipient of the Fr. John Milton Scholarship, and she more than meets the requirement of having distinguished herself in science. Her teachers say she has demonstrated consistent growth during her four years as a science student, especially in her senior year anatomy class.
“In two years in my classroom, Angelina never missed an assignment and never did anything less than exemplary work,” says her science teacher, Chris Call. “Her quiet yet reliable approach to learning, thorough preparation and mad lab skills made her a standout in a challenging anatomy class. She’s talented, focused, scientific, and when no one is looking she’s creative and artistic, too.”
Angelina plans to attends Mount Mary University in the fall, where she is planning to major in biology in order to further her interest of becoming a forensic biologist. Mount Mary is an all-women’s, Catholic university, located in Milwaukee. It is one of only two Hispanic serving institutions in Wisconsin and is consistently ranked highly by U.S. News & World Report.

All of which would please Fr. Milton. He was a career educator when he began consulting in the science department at Cristo Rey St. Marin. He was a founding member of the science department at Saint Viator High School, where he taught for 20 years, and he spent another 24 years as a professor at De Paul University in Chicago.

Fr. Milton began helping out at CRSM in 2011 after his retirement. Fr. Milton not only brought his wealth of experience, but he brought lab equipment that he was able to obtain through his network of physics colleagues. Fr. Milton worked closely with physics teacher Ms. Kumkum Bonnerjee to introduce labs to students and together they started the school’s first AP physics course. Students and faculty members alike enjoyed the projects he brought to the class, including one standout, “When Pigs Fly.”
Fr. Milton passed away Jan. 24, 2022 at the age of 92, but his legacy and love of science lives on in this scholarship and its recipients.
